CITY & POETRY by Alexandra Van Lierde

Alexandra Van Lierde is a French-Belgian artist based in the Philippines. Her coming exhibition is called "City and Poetry". Alex's inspirations have been influenced by her surrounding and more especially the city where she has been living for 9 years: Manila. On her canvases, you can guess the light silhouettes of skyscrapers in the clouds, you can see the chaos of the city in the middle of a bright or aggressive sky. Her paintings are at the edge of abstraction, as water, nature, wind are trying to push it over, or to live in harmony together. Shapes, lights and colors are unusual. In her interpretation of our modern cities, Alex purposely adds vivid colors such as pink, purple, turquoize, because, despite chaos and oppression, there is beauty, passion and poetry in Manila. And a bit of craziness too.

This exhibition is, for her, a tribute to Manila, where so many happened in her life over the last decade. A home away from home. A place you hate and you love at the same time.

Alex uses oil on canvases. She has been painting with oil for the last 15 years, it is for her the best medium to play with layers and transparencies - more oil paint you add, more intense and deep it gets. In her canvases, viewer sometimes feel literally attracted by a hole of light or a well of white, wondering what is behind and where it will bring him or her.

This exhibition will happen in LRI Plaza, in Makati, with the opening on Tuesday May 14 at 6.30pm.

Exhibition will run for 3 days only, until May 16 at 8pm.
